LATHAM, N.Y. – First-year Kyree Smith (Baltimore, Md./City) became the fifth St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s basketball player this season named the United East Conference Men’s Basketball Volt Division Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon (Feb. 19).
This is Smith’s first career Defensive Player of the Week award and marks the sixth week that a St. Mary’s College player has picked up this honor.
The 6-4 guard helped the Seahawks to an 85-81 road win over Penn State Abington in the regular-season finale on February 14. Smith hauled in a career-best 12 rebounds, including seven defensive boards, while adding seven points and four assists.
St. Mary’s College (16-11) will be back in action on Wednesday, February 21, when the third-seeded Seahawks travel to Middletown, Pa., to take on No. 1 seed Penn State Harrisburg (22-4) in the semifinals of the 2024 United East Conference Volt Division Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament at 5 pm.
