At approximately 3:45 pm onย March 3, the local Huntingtown and Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene of a 10-year-old child who had been injured because of a sledding accident. This scene was in the woods at 90 South View Drive.

With Monday and Tuesday being snow days in Calvert County and the time for kids off from school to enjoy the snow, others cleared the roads and parking lots. This 10-year-old drove his sled over a 100-foot embankment down into the gulley below.

Emergency responders were unsure what caused the child to go down the steep embankment. However, first responders noticed that the child was thrown from his sled about halfway down the hill and hit a tree before sliding to the bottom.

It appeared that the child lost consciousness at some point. When first responders reach the child, he complained about back injuries and weakness in the legs. The child also showed signs of hypothermia.

He was stabilized at the bottom of the gulley by medical personnel and then was placed in the basket to be pulled up the embankment to be taken to the ambulance.ย  There were about sixteen volunteers from Prince Frederick and Huntingtown fire departments on the scene to help with the rescue.

The ambulance from Prince Frederick transported the 10-year-old to Calvert Memorial Hospital helicopter pad to be transported by Eagle one to another hospital for more treatment.
