OWINGS, Md. — The SOMD Sports Plex is up for sale according to a Facebook post by the business owner.
According to several posts by Sports Plex owner Jason Scaggs in February, he is seeking a new owner or several shareholders to “pass the torch” on the business. If no owner is found, the Sports Plex will close April 30. Scaggs did not respond to The BayNet’s request for an interview.
SOMD Sports Plex is an indoor sports and fitness complex. The complex currently includes a 13,500-square-foot indoor turf facility opened in April 2024. It’s used by soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball and softball teams, and is used to host tournaments for those sports.
The Sports Plex also includes a 21,500-square-foot hard court and fitness facility. This building is constructed but requires interior finishes to be usable. Once completed, it will support basketball, volleyball, pickleball, group fitness and more.
Phase Two, a 21,500-square-foot hard court and fitness facility, is already constructed and will support basketball, volleyball, pickleball, group fitness and more. The facility is the largest open indoor sports venue in Southern Maryland.
In a Feb. 11 post, Scaggs outlined the cost to complete the larger building and the various streams of revenue and projected that once it’s completed, the Sports Plex will generate an annual revenue of $1.4 million.
In a video posted on Feb. 13, Scaggs said the deal was a “million-dollar head start” to owning this type of business.
The sale, however, does not include the building or the land. Scaggs owns the land and building, and the new owners would lease it from him — this is in line with the past agreement with the former business owner when it was MMG Sports Performance Center, before financial difficulties resulted in Scaggs taking over the business temporarily.
In the same Feb. 13 video, Scaggs said he only ever envisioned himself as a “temporary bridge” to help keep the establishment open.
Scaggs said that while he has had fun with the venture, his primary business of excavating and construction is too demanding to run the Sports Plex.
“Instead of getting a rent check, the local excavating guy had to watch a lot of YouTube videos on how to run a sports center,” Scaggs joked in an interview with The BayNet. He said that he’s invested his own funds and taken out loans to finish the second building, but a new owner must be found in order to fully complete the facility.
He also added that the turf’s building’s cash flow exceeded $200,000 last year. The BayNet could not independently confirm this claim.
“I would have shut it down two years ago if I didn’t believe in this idea,” Scaggs said in the interview, adding that it was a good opportunity for a person, group or even nonprofit.
