In front of a crowd of 6,555 at Regency Furniture Stadium, Johermyn Chavez hit a walk-off, RBI single in the bottom of the 11th to give the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Long Island Ducks in the second game of their five-game series. The win is the first in eight tries this season for Southern Maryland against Long Island.
Chavez came to the plate hitless in 17 at bats since joining the club on June 1 but he found a hole through the right side off Jeremy Accardo (3-5) to score Tony Delmonico from second base to win the game.
Eduardo Morlan (2-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for the Blue Crabs pitching a 1-2-3 top of the 11th. The Southern Maryland bullpen retired the last 11 batters that they faced.
Southern Maryland took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the 1st. With the bases loaded, Dave Sappelt hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jonny Kaplan for a 1-0 lead.
Long Island scratched and clawed for their first run with a two-out rally in the 7th. Keith Castillo singled and advanced to second after Dan Lyons reached on an error. Fehlandt Lentini then tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double down the left field line. Lyons attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Angel Sanchez gave the Blue Crabs the lead back in the bottom of the 7th with a two-out, RBI single that scored Allan de San Miguel to make it 2-1.
The Ducks tied the game up for a second straight inning in the 8th after three straight singles. Randy Ruizโs single scored Lew Ford to tie the game and spoil the victory for Blue Crabs starter Ian Marshall.
Marshall was sharp for the Blue Crabs allowing an unearned run over seven innings with three stirkeouts. John Brownell also received a no decision yielding two runs on seven hits in seven innings with five strikeouts.
The Blue Crabs continue their five-game series against the Long Island Ducks tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:05 p.m.
Southern Maryland will send lefty Brian Burres (3-2, 1.80) to the mound against Long Island righty Bobby Blevins (3-1, 3.61) in Game 1. Game 2โs starters have yet to be announced.
