LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – In the heart of cultural enrichment, the Kennedy Center stands as a beacon of artistic excellence, offering a platform for fine art to thrive and captivate audiences worldwide, transcending boundaries, fostering cultural exchange and enriching the lives of our youth with beauty and meaning.
Based on the aforementioned powerful words shared by the Spring Ridge Middle School students, the Alvin Ailey performance, showcased at the Kennedy Center, not only offered physical benefits through dance but also emotional growth, confidence-building, and exposure to diverse artistic expressions.
For twenty-one Spring Ridge Middle School students attending the Alvin Ailey dance program, the journey was not just about mastering movements but also about discovering oneself amidst a whirlwind of rhythm and expression. With every graceful leap and powerful gesture, these young students tapped into a new and/or higher realm of self-discovery, confidence-building, and cultural appreciation.

“Encouraging me to see beyond what is just physically in a picture”.
“An opportunity for me to see the arts in a way I have not seen before and share my experiences with my loved ones”.
“An opportunity to allow me to experience the great work of art”.
“The field trip means a lot to me…because I will value this experience and remember it for a long time”.
“I have always wanted to see the Kennedy Center. I imagined its beauty and how beautiful it would be to see professional dancers”.
“This fine art performance was a lot more than a boring, play, concert, or recital. When you really watch you are so filled with emotions, as you see the talent of the performers. I was so inspired to challenge myself to do hard things that required hard work”.

Guided by dedicated teachers, Dr. Deaneth Brown-Taylor and Ms. Kay Jahn; buoyed by unwavering school officials, Mr. Charles Dunbar and Dr. Maureen Montgomery; supported by community leaders and organizations, such as Ms. Jackie Hicks, Mr. William Garrett, St. Mary’s Arts Council, E&R Photography and the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation, committed to elevating the transformative power of the arts, the students were so grateful for what they called a magical and memorable experience.
Beyond the confines of the Kennedy Center, these experiences instill invaluable academic and life skills—discipline, teamwork, resilience—that transcend the stage and shape future leaders, says Ms. Adrienne M. Somerville, Founder and President, of Carolyn E. Parker Foundation.

As the curtains rose on the 2nd Annual Field Trip to The Kennedy Center event, it not only commemorated a milestone but also reaffirmed a commitment to nurturing creativity and fostering inclusivity within our communities. Through the lens of fine art and the rhythm of Alvin Ailey dance, we celebrate the richness of our shared humanity and the boundless potential of our youth.
In closing, Ms. Somerville expressed how the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation remains focused on offering invaluable opportunities for young minds to creatively flourish, contributing to their holistic development. This 2nd Annual Alvin Ailey field trip underscores the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a love for the fine arts for students within the St. Mary’s County community.
