CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. — Firefighters and hazardous materials crews responded Thursday evening after a Tesla struck debris in the roadway, damaging the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery.
At approximately 5:36 p.m. on Aug. 27, emergency crews were dispatched to the area of Trinity Church Road and Ryceville Road in Charlotte Hall for a reported hazardous materials incident.
According to initial information from the scene, the Tesla struck what was described as a trailer hitch lying in the roadway. The object impacted the underside of the vehicle, where the lithium battery is located.
Crews reported smoke and an increase in battery temperature following the impact.
The vehicle’s battery was safely disconnected, and no injuries were reported.
Chief 2B established command of the incident. Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department personnel and county hazardous materials resources remained on the scene as crews monitored the vehicle and battery.
Motorists should use caution in the area while emergency personnel continue operations.
