LEONARDTOWN, Md. – During their May 8, 2024, meeting, the St. Mary’s County Board of Education approved a contract award to Dennis Anderson Construction in the amount of $921,750.00 and a construction contingency in the amount of $50,000.00 to construct a new 1,380 sq ft one-story stadium concession outbuilding at Leonardtown High School.
The presentation, led by Paola Laino, stated the current concession stand has been identified as a need for replacement due to its age, being constructed in 1978. The current facility also has limited exterior restrooms.
This facility is used for a plethora of events such as athletic events, fine arts programs, assemblies, classes, and community programs.
The new facility will include masonry-bearing walls, a wood truss, and a metal standing seam roof. It will also include a concessions room, storage, restrooms, a janitor’s closet, and an exterior water fountain.
The substantial completion is set for September 20, 2024.
According to the meeting’s agenda, “A multi-step procurement method was conducted as follows. First, potential bidders submitted technical qualifications as the first step of the bidding process. Specific criteria were established regarding experience, expertise, financial, and legal standing. Technical qualifications were evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Second, only prequalified bidders were permitted to submit price bids. The final procurement contract award was based on the lowest bid submitted.”
A motion was made by Board Member Mary Washington which was seconded by Cathy Allen. The motion received 4 yeas and one nay from Board Member James Davis.

Is this money well spent? In my opinion no it is not, I believe it is an example of wasting money. Due to inflation these projects are too costly. We should have redirected those resources and tabled the project to a later time.
I’m so glad that a MILLION DOLLARS of our tax money is being used to build a concession stand… I can’t think of ANY better use the county could spend this money on. Who needs clean and safe towns when you could have a snack shop that’ll get used 3 hours a week…at best.
I really, really hope that figure is a typo and it’s $92k instead of $921k.
Almost a million dollars(!) to build a 1,400 sq ft block building?…oh…and it doesn’t include any land purchase. Congratulations.
