Held each November at the Hollywood Social Hall, the 27th annual St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Gala raised more than $197,000, after expenses, for MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital healthcare scholarships, capital projects, and new equipment.
On Friday, Nov. 21, around 580 guests were charmed by the essence of the Far East as they entered into Southern Maryland’s premier event sponsored by The Foundation, a charitable arm of the nonprofit community hospital. Featuring a gourmet dinner by renowned Washington D.C. caterer Design Cuisine and lively music by the band Nocturne, the 2014 Foundation Gala was a great time with an even greater purpose.
“As the Foundation’s flagship event, we are raising funds to help with scholarships for folks pursuing a career in the medical field and also upgrade the health care in our community to help the needs of St. Mary’s County,” said 2014 Gala Chairperson, Helen Wernecke. “I think the gala was the best one we’ve ever hosted and it turned out beautifully.”
Several of Southern Maryland’s most prominent businesses, medical professionals and local organizations sponsored the evening’s festivities. The Foundation and MedStar St. Mary’s would like acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors of the event. We are especially grateful to the Jamieson and Meyer Families, Pamela and David Jamieson and Jennifer and Tim Meyer, for their steadfast support as the 2014 Gala’s Presenting Sponsor.
Thank you to this year’s Premiere sponsors: AMARYLLIS, Inc. Floral + Event Design; AMEWAS, Inc.; Associates in Radiation Medicine; and Shah Associates, MD, LLC. Diamond Sponsors included Cherry Cove Land Development, ECS Federal, Inc., MedStar Health, MEP Health, LLC, Making People Better, and Christine R. Wray and John Felicitas. With sponsorship amounts up to $15,000 and $10,000 for Premiere and Diamond status respectively, the Foundation and MedStar St. Mary’s greatly appreciates their contributions, and in addition, would like to thank all of the 54 Gold, Silver, and Bronze sponsors for their thoughtful donations.
A special recognition also goes out to the following for their support: Chin Hamaya Culture Center, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, family and friends of the Gala Committee Members, Jan and Tom Barnes, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Plant Operations, S-Kape Salon Spa, and the Servpro of St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties.
This year’s theme was Wrapped in Red. The foyer and set design featured hues of rich burgundies, crimson and scarlet to set the mood of imperial majesty throughout the entire hall, along with Ikebana arrangements by Casey Page Pfeiff of the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. Helping to create the enchanting scene were her graphic design students, along with the carpentry program taught by Tony Cherry. The lounge and photography design was organized by AMARYLLIS, Inc. Floral + Event Design under the direction of Rick Davis.
“A new feature this year was a trip as the raffle item,” said Foundation Chair, Jennifer Blake-Meyer. “This is the first year in as many as I can remember that we sold out of chances early in the evening.”
Attendees had the opportunity to purchase tickets, known as “chances,” to win a vacation abroad in one of four destinations of their choosing, each with a multiple-night stay and airfare for two. In the running was a tropical adventure in Barbados, chocolate and cheese tours in Switzerland, an art-lover’s dream in Paris, and an exotic stay in the city of Tokyo. Congratulations go to our lucky winners, David and Joann Wood, who chose to go to Paris!
“This year’s gala was absolutely spectacular in all ways,” Blake-Meyer said. “So much time and effort goes into planning an event like this, and when it comes to fruition, you can only hope it goes half as well as this one did.”
To date, the Foundation’s scholarship program has made awards to more than 100 local students pursuing education in nursing and allied health, ensuring a qualified healthcare workforce today and for the future. Funds raised by The Foundation also provide support for capital expansion projects and equipment.
