ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — After more than two years under interim leadership, St. Mary’s Parish, encompassing Trinity Episcopal Church in St. Mary’s City and St. Mary’s Chapel in Ridge, has welcomed The Reverend Charity Humm as its new rector.
Rev. Humm began her ministry on Nov. 1, 2024, bringing a diverse background in counseling, faith formation, and community building to the parish. A 2023 graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree, Rev. Humm has served in various roles, including Adult Programs Coordinator at Claggett’s faith formation retreats and chaplain during Claggett’s summer camps.
Her experience also includes working as a regional representative and supply clergy for Southern Maryland regional churches, and completing a two-year parish internship at Christ Church Port Republic during its 350th anniversary year.
Rev. Humm expressed enthusiasm about her new role, emphasizing her commitment to fostering healing, wellness, and community engagement. “I can’t wait to see where Jesus is leading the faithful people of the parish in this next chapter,” she said in her introduction to the parish community.
Parish Secretary Robin Pajak shared the excitement of the congregation, stating, “We are very excited to have Rev. Charity. St. Mary’s Parish has had an Interim Rector for over 2 years.”
Rev. Humm resides in St. Leonard, Maryland, with her husband, Rev. Matt Humm, an Episcopal priest at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Prince Frederick, their three sons—Alex, Gareth, and Galahad—and their border collie, Finn.
In addition to her pastoral duties, Rev. Humm is known for her sense of humor and eclectic interests, including hiking, campfires, quirky films, and co-founding what she describes as the first unofficial fight club at Virginia Theological Seminary.
