The Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of St. Mary’s County and operates local government through its various departments.ย The Board is “a body politic and corporate” and performs duties and exercises powers in accordance with Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland and with the Code of Public Local Laws as enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland. The county commissioners are elected by voters to a four year term.ย
The Board of County Commissioners for St. Maryโs County for the 2010-2014 term are: Lawrence D. Jarboe, District 3; Cynthia L. Jones, District 1; Todd B. Morgan, District 4; Daniel Morris, District 2; and Francis Jack Russell, president. ย
They will be sworn into office on Monday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m. in a ceremony at Leonardtown High School and preside over the December 7 Board of County Commissioners meeting. The Oath of Office ceremony is open to the public and will be aired live on County Government Channel 95 (Channel 95 can also viewed from the countyโs website at www.stmarysmd.com, click on Videos). Their meetings are also aired live on Ch. 95 and rebroadcast several times during the week. ย

The incoming Boardโs first meeting agenda starting at 9:00 a.m. includes the following appointments: BOCC Vice President for 2010-11, MACo Legislative Committee member and Alternate, Tri-County Council Commissioner Representative and At-large member, and St. Maryโs County Commissioner Rep to Tri County Councilโs Veteranโs Committee. At 6:30 p.m. a Public Forum for general comments from the public will be held in the Chesapeake Building. Discussion items will include additional public comments on a legislative proposal that was presented at a public meeting on Nov. 9 to clarify that members and employees of the St. Maryโs County Metropolitan Commission are subject to the provisions of the St. Maryโs County Public Ethics Ordinance and comments on recommendations of the Final Report of the Metropolitan Commission Task Force of June 2, 1010, in particular, on recommendations No. 10, 11 and 14. Additional public comments on proposed changes to the local building code (which is based on the International Building Code) which were presented at a public hearing on Nov. 9.ย Included is a new requirement that fire sprinklers be included in all single family homes constructed after the effective date, including homes served by private wells. Currently fire sprinklers are required in single family homes receiving public water.
