More than 800 Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students competed in the regional Destination ImagiNation competition held Saturday, March 16, at North Point High School. Fifty-one teams advance to the state-level competition, scheduled for April 13 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
More than 134 teams from Charles County public elementary, middle and high schools, and regional private schools competed to solve one of six problems in the long-term academic event that challenges students to work together to apply creativity, critical thinking skills and their unique talents. Challenges are separated into three levels of competition: elementary, middle and high. Teams that place at the regional event advance to the state tournament.
The following Charles County teams placed in the top four spots at the regional Destination ImagiNation tournament.
Winners in the In the Zone challenge are:
- Elementary: J.C. Parks Elementary School, Challengers team, first place; Malcolm Elementary School, Party Rockerz team, second place; Berry Elementary School, Spartans team, third place; and Parks, Mightiest Brainiac Crew team, fourth place.
- Middle: John Hanson Middle School, DI Like Donuts team, first place; and a team composed of students from Malcolm and Hanson, second place.
- High: Henry E. Lackey High School, The Little Rascals of Lackey team, first place; North Point High School, UmmโฆWhat? team, second place; and North Point, AC/DI team, third place.
Winners in the Wind Visible challenge are:
- Elementary: Dr. James Craik Elementary School, Kinetic Inventors team, first place; Craik, DI Shooting Stars team, second place; Eva Turner Elementary School, Twisters team, tie for third place; and Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, DIominators team, tie for third place.
- High: Milton M. Somers Middle School and La Plata High School, Breaking Wind team, first place; and Lackey, PRETZEL Heads team, second place.
The team from Somers and La Plata competed at the high-school level because the team was comprised of both middle and high school students.
