Leonardtown, M.D.– On Monday morning, Aug 17, at Judge Karen Abrams sentenced Corey M. Brooks, 28, of Clements (pictured, left) to 18 months in St. Mary’s County Detention Center, along with three years supervised probation.
Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel White ย said “these are the hardest cases. Mr.Brooks has a strong family. I do not think we are going to see Mr.Brooks back in the courtroom, but I also feel it is my job to give the best sentence.”
During the court case, confusion occurred when both defense attorney Cynthia Panos and White could not come to agreement on the sentencing guidelines.ย
“Corey comes from a very good family, he had no problems in his childhood, he has a child at home that he wishes to be with, he has a job lined up,” said Panos.ย
Also in attendance was Rod Orclani a Jehovah Witness. Orclani spoke to Judge Abrams about the change that Brooks has shown.
“I had an opportunity to meet Corey. He saw a force besides his own, he told me that he wants to make an adjustment to his life,” said Orclani.ย
Judge Abrams asked Brooks if he would like to say anything in court. “I apologize for my actions, I take full responsibility. I can’t go back and change things, I am sorry,” said Brooks.ย
ย Brooks faces four years of back up time if he violates his parole. Brooks was also granted work release, he has a job awaiting him.
Restitution is still to be determined at a later date. Items that were stolen are still beingย returned to the owners.
