Allie Mohler, a Charles County Teen Girl Scout, recently donated to the Center for Children, a hand-crafted, castle-themed bookcase that she designed and built for her Silver Award Project.ย The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn, giving girls the opportunity to be a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving her community.
As Allie developed her project concept, she decided, due to her own learning disability, that she wanted to focus on helping other youth improve their reading skills. She researched organizations to work with and as the recipient of her efforts, Allie chose the Center for Children for its broad reach to children of all ages in the community. Through a site visit and working with the Center staff, Allie decided to design and build a castle-themed bookcase. She filled it with 325 gently used books collected as the admission to a Girl Scoutsโ pajama party she hosted. Allie understands that the more one reads, the better their reading skills; therefore, she wants to encourage Center clients to use the books both in the office and at home.ย
As part of the project, Allie learned how to work with local businesses. She contacted the Waldorf Home Depot which donated all of the lumber necessary to build the bookcase.
ย Allie explains, โItโs such a wonderful feeling to experience such a great sense of accomplishment when you set out to help others in your community.โ
ย According to Catherine L. Meyers, LCPC, Executive Director of the Center for Children, is thrilled by Allieโs generosity, โThe bookcase is beautiful and our children love the books. We are extremely appreciative of the thought, care and attention to detail that went into building the bookcase. I want to thank Allie for her hard work and commitment to helping others and congratulate her on receiving the Silver Award.โ
