Prince Frederick, MD – A 17-year-old Calvert County youth accused of armed robbery and assault is being charged as an adult, documents on file in District Court stated. The incident that led to charges being filed against the defendant, identified as Brandon Lee Duncan of Chesapeake Beach, occurred Feb. 26 in Huntingtown. According to an application for statement of charges filed by Deputy Edward Yates, police initially learned of the armed robbery and assault after a vehicle occupied by several juveniles crashed into a tree on Loving Way. The youths subsequently fled the scene on foot. It was learned that the vehicle had been stolen from a South Anne Arundel County resident.

Yatesโ€™ investigation determined that the robbery was the result of a failed drug deal and the weapon used was a pellet gun. Police spoke with Duncanโ€™s parents March 7 after going to his residence in an effort to locate him. However, he was not at home. The following afternoon Duncan was brought to the sheriffโ€™s office by his mother to provide a statement regarding the case. โ€œDuring the course of the interview Duncan made several admissions to his participation in this case,โ€ said Yates, who stated in court documents that the teen at first claimed he had been taking Xanax prior to the Feb. 26 motor vehicle crash. Later he admitted to smoking marijuana with the other juveniles involved in the case. Duncan subsequently admitted to owning the pellet gun. โ€œHe states he carries it around Chesapeake Beach with him because he has many enemies,โ€ Yates stated. โ€œDuncan stated that the pellet gun has the ability to stun its enemies. Duncan denied ever pointing the pellet gun at [the juvenile victim]. Duncan did not appear truthful during this interview as he provided minimal details and withheld numerous relevant details when asked. Based on the facts, I believe that Brandon Duncan committed a robbery with a pellet gun, displayed as a dangerous weapon, with the intent to permanently withhold property belonging to [the juvenile victim].โ€

Yates stated in the court documents that Calvert County Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorney Ashley Sowls reviewed the case and made the decision to charge Duncan in adult court. In addition to armed robbery and first-degree assault, both felonies; Duncan was charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, theft $100 and under $1,500; and conspiracy to commit theft $100 to under $1,500. He is currently being held without bond. A hearing on the case is tentatively scheduled for April 20 in District Court.
