Three St. Mary’s County residents have collaborated on a book that would be a perfect gift for children during the Halloween season. The book called “Halloween Fright on a Chesapeake Night”: tells the story of three black cats who live on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and relates their trick or treating adventures.

The book is a collaboration of writer Ellynne Brice Davis, illustrator Joyce Judd and editor Myra Raspa. All are retired St. Mary’s County Public Schools’ teachers.
“Halloween Fright on a Chesapeake Night” came out just before Halloween last year but this year the extra time gives plenty of opportunities to purchase the book.

Judd’s illustrations, Davis’ age appropriate text and Raspa’s tight editing blend to make this book a delight for children. This writer especially liked one of the opening panels showing the cats playing along the shoreline.

In another, during their trick or threating escapades, they encounter a bat which flies out the door and startles them.

The book also includes a back-page song with the same name as the book title which is expected to be played in the key of e (eeek!) minor.

The three collaborators will be conducting two book signings before Halloween: on Saturday, October 18th from 2-5 p.m. at Good Earth in Leonardtown and Saturday, October 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. outside Ye Olde Towne Café on Leonardtown square.
