LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Emergency crews responded Thursday evening to a water rescue in a wooded area near Sandpiper Lane after multiple people reportedly fell through thin ice.
St. Mary’s County Fire and EMS units were dispatched to the area at approximately 6:07 p.m. after reports that two to three individuals had gone through the ice. Responders located the victims about a mile into the woods. All three were out of the water by the time crews reached them.
Maryland State Police Trooper 7 was requested to fly overhead until the scene was declared clear.
One patient was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Authorities urged the public to use caution around frozen bodies of water, warning that ice conditions remain unpredictable during winter weather.
