During Tidewater Archaeology Weekend, visitors can help archaeologists uncover and identify artifacts excavated from the site where Marylandโs first governor, Leonard Calvert, lived.ย The excavations, near Town Center, will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.ย An exhibit at the site will feature objects found during this summerโs excavations. ย
Tours of the archaeology laboratory will be available at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m.ย Find out why and how conservators save these pieces of the past and view a variety of objects recovered from Marylandโs beginnings.ย The size of the facility restricts the number of visitors, please sign up at the Visitorโs Center when you arrive at the museum.ย This is the only time of year when the lab is open to the public. ย
At 2 p.m. each day, director of research Henry Miller will offer a walking tour and describe how archaeologists are able to re-create the past using scant archaeological and historical evidence.ย To join the one-hour excursion, meet Dr. Miller at the gazebo at 2 p.m.ย You will discover that, unlike Indiana Jones, real archaeologists seldom get chased, punched, or have to traverse the site on a rope swing.ย But every day they assemble clues that reveal the secrets of the past. ย
Working in the field can be hot, dirty work. Bring sunscreen, a hat, water, and a sense of adventure.ย Special activities and access to all of the museum exhibits are included in the museum entry fee ($10.00 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for students, and $3.50 for children ages 6-12).ย ย ย Refreshments will be available on site throughout the day. ย
