PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Brooklyn man was arrested in Calvert County after deputies stopped a tow truck displaying stolen registration plates and later discovered the vehicle was connected to a reported theft and fraud investigation, authorities said.

Jerlyn Guerrero, 45, of Brooklyn, is charged with possession and sale of stolen manufacturer numbers, possession of serial numbers for fraudulent purposes, and theft under $100 following an incident on Jan. 12, 2026, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 11:20 a.m. for a report of a tow truck entering Calvert County with suspected stolen registration tags. Police said the tags had been confirmed stolen out of Montgomery County, prompting officers to locate the vehicle as it traveled southbound toward Dunkirk.

Authorities said deputies located the tow truck at a Wawa gas station in Dunkirk and conducted a traffic stop. Guerrero, who was driving the vehicle, was detained, and the truck was secured. Police confirmed Guerrero’s identity through a Maryland-issued driver’s license.

During the investigation, deputies contacted Montgomery County authorities, who confirmed the registration plates were reported stolen. Investigators also learned the plates were registered to a different tow company and did not match the vehicle Guerrero was operating.

According to police, Guerrero told deputies he owned a towing company and was the sole employee. He claimed the plates had been obtained from the Motor Vehicle Administration several months earlier after his original tags were suspended due to unpaid toll violations.

Further investigation revealed the stolen tags had been issued in April 2025, several months earlier than Guerrero claimed. Deputies also determined the vehicle’s registration number did not match the vehicle identification number on the tow truck and that the truck should have been registered under a different Maryland plate.

Guerrero was placed under arrest and issued multiple traffic citations, including driving on a suspended license and operating a vehicle with suspended registration. The stolen tags and registration card were seized for safekeeping.

Later that afternoon, deputies conducted additional follow-up with the Motor Vehicle Administration. Police said an MVA investigator later advised the registration plates may have been issued in error, but charges related to possession of stolen tags and theft were still filed.

Guerrero was released on his own recognizance pending trial. Court records show he is scheduled to appear March 2, 2026, in Calvert District Court.
