La Plata Fall Fest

Lee Farrel, 15 months of La Plata, enjoyed events at Fall Fest Oct. 9.

La Plata, MD – The remnants of Hurricane Matthew pushed out to sea early Sunday morning, allowing the Town of La Plata to host its annual Fall Festival Oct. 9.

A blustery wind hampered some of the dayโ€™s activities.

โ€œUnfortunately for the kids, with the wind like it is we had to cancel the moon bounce for safety reasons,โ€ La Plata Councilmember Keith Back said.

โ€œItโ€™s too bad, because there are usually kids lined up to get on it,โ€ he added.

That didnโ€™t stop the kids from having fun, however, and there was plenty for them to do from face painting to pumpkin decorating.

A petting zoo featuring a llama and other critters proved popular, as did a mini race track set up with pedal cars for the children to ride through a course of hay bales.

Sundayโ€™s event started out with a major crowd which thinned out some about the time the Redskins game with the Baltimore Ravens began.

There were still plenty of folks to enjoy the sounds of the band Pork Belly, featuring a mix of 70s and 80s classics.

Most were relieved the hurricane finally decided to make its course out over the Atlantic after dumping a considerable amount of rain Saturday into Sunday morning.

โ€œIt stayed over us longer than they thought it would,โ€ one fairgoer noted.

It cleared out just in time for a day of fun geared toward the kids.

The kettle corn guy was very busy.
