LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – Deputies with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office targeted unsafe driving near the main commuter entrance of Naval Air Station Patuxent River this week, issuing 35 citations in the span of a few hours.
The enforcement detail took place Tuesday, Sept. 30, outside Gate 2, an area that regularly sees congestion during base traffic peaks. Deputies said the violations included red-light infractions, illegal U-turns, and other intersection-related offenses.
The sheriff’s office released a video highlighting the initiative and reminding drivers that a “No U-turn” sign is posted just south of the gate.
Officials said the effort is part of ongoing measures to reduce dangerous habits on Route 235 and improve safety for military personnel, civilian workers, and local residents.

Gate 2 is another hot spot. People turning left onto base will block the intersection and it gets ugly there. Recently a large truck was turning and blocked all of the lanes northbound.
It seems courteous driving is extinct.
Run into them, it’s their fault for failing to yield right of way, been there done that
Sorry sheriff but you got as much luck at stopping the fools blocking that intersection as you got at stopping the NASCAR strip they call 235
Finally it seems like something is being done about the people going into the base blocking the intersection! This has been going on for years and I hope they do more enforcement because old habits of some of these people are hard to break. The same thing needs to be done at gate 1 also!
Wow.. Literally nothing else better to do.
The blocking of the intersections at gates 1 and 2 has gone on too long. It is good to see something finally being done about it.
