Turtle Crossing: Maryland Drivers Asked To Be Alert This Breeding Season

CALIFORNIA, Md. — As temperatures rise and summer approaches, wildlife officials across Maryland are once again asking drivers to stay vigilant for turtles crossing roads during their annual breeding migration.

From now through early fall, turtles—particularly Eastern box turtles and snapping turtles—are more likely to be spotted near wetlands, ditches and roadways as they search for nesting sites. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging motorists to slow down and check the pavement, especially in rural and suburban areas where turtle crossings are common.

“Turtles are most vulnerable this time of year,” said a DNR representative. “When they attempt to cross roads, even a single vehicle can have a devastating impact on local populations.”

If safe to do so, drivers are encouraged to help turtles cross the road in the direction they’re already heading. Experts caution against relocating turtles far from where they’re found, as many species have small home ranges and may become disoriented or fail to thrive if moved too far.

The reminder comes as conservationists continue to emphasize the long-term effects of adult turtle mortality. A single female turtle can take over a decade to reach breeding age, and losing one mature adult can significantly affect the survival of future generations.

Motorists who encounter injured turtles or wildlife near roadways can contact local animal control or wildlife rescue organizations for assistance.
