ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The U.S. Naval Academy was placed on lockdown Thursday evening, Sept. 11, 2025, after reports of a potential threat on campus drew a large response from military police and local law enforcement.
Naval Support Activity Annapolis confirmed the lockdown began shortly after 5:30 p.m., saying the precaution was taken following reports of suspicious activity on academy grounds. Students and staff were ordered to shelter in place as Naval Security Forces swept through buildings, including Bancroft Hall, the dormitory that houses more than 4,000 midshipmen.
By 9 p.m., officials said there was no active shooter threat. One person, however, was injured during the security operation and flown to a hospital. The individual is listed in stable condition, according to authorities.
Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like gunfire during the initial response, though investigators have not confirmed those accounts. Officials have not released details about a suspect or what may have prompted the incident.
Police vehicles and emergency crews remained staged across the downtown Annapolis campus late into the evening as the investigation continues.
