UPDATE – 2/23/2026 – Two Dead, One Critically Injured After Falling Tree Strikes Vehicle In Calvert; Victims Identified

SUNDERLAND, Md. — Two people were killed and a third seriously injured Sunday afternoon, Feb. 22, after a large tree fell onto a pickup truck traveling southbound on Solomons Island Road (Route 2) near Aspen Woods Drive, according to emergency officials.

The crash was reported at approximately 4:40 p.m., when 911 callers reported that a tree had crushed a pickup truck and that at least one occupant appeared to be trapped.

Responders arrived to find a single‑vehicle incident involving a pickup truck pinned beneath a large downed tree, creating additional hazards in the roadway.

Fire and rescue personnel later confirmed that two occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. A third occupant remained trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by firefighters in under 25 minutes.

Flight medics from the Maryland State Police Aviation Command responded to assist. The third patient was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center with serious injuries.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation. A Snow Emergency Plan is already in effect for Calvert and surrounding counties.
