PINEY POINT, Md. – Built in 1836, the Piney Point Lighthouse and keeper’s quarters are located 14 miles up the Potomac River from the Chesapeake Bay. This beacon stands preserved today as a witness to a bygone era of high society where many from Washington D.C. and beyond would travel to Piney Point for a vacation. [1] This historical site is hosting an exciting holiday event!

Open daily from Sunday, November 26th to Sunday, January 1st from 10 am – 5 pm. Admission is $7.00 for adults $3.50 for seniors, students, and military – and five-year-olds and under free! The museum store will be open during museum hours for holiday shopping. Exhibits are closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The website put it properly stating, “We’re kicking off the opening of the holiday season inside the museum and Keeper’s Quarters here at Piney Point Lighthouse with family activities, refreshments and more.” [2]

Don’t tempt me with a good time! It exceeded expectations and it was a learning experience just as much as a joyful, warm one. It is not often that one gets to do both.

The holidays are here! The historical Piney Point Museum and Lighthouse are celebrating as much as the rest of us. The rich history of this landmark is one of the Civil War; it’s been a beacon of light, to all. Whenever you get a chance to visit, especially if you are a history aficionado, it would behoove you to take a tour.

It is a wonder of wonders; it’s beautiful, poignant, and a large part of Maryland’s dedication to preserving what should be remembered for the men who fought with such bravery and perished on those beaches. We must cherish and honor that. On a brighter note, there is still time to attend the holiday tours open to the public.

As a historical monument, “National Geographic Magazine aptly called Maryland ‘America in Miniature’ in a nod to the state’s diversity of landscapes. Our state’s topography ranges from the forested mountains of Western Maryland to the sunny Atlantic Ocean beaches, while the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the country, nearly splits the state in two. You will find vibrant cities, charming small towns, and acres of agricultural land, offering a variety of recreational activities, unique attractions, historical landmarks, and hip events. Add comfortable lodging, delectable dining, and world-class arts and entertainment.” [2]

Climb the oldest lighthouse on the Potomac (constructed in 1836), see historic boats and maritime history in the museum, learn about the U1105 Historic Shipwreck Dive Preserve, stroll the beach, paddle about in your kayak & enjoy 6 acres of park, pier & more.

The museum details the area’s history and includes an exhibit of the WWII U-1105 Black Panther German submarine, which lies just offshore in an area designated as the state’s first Historic Shipwreck Dive Preserve.

The Potomac River Maritime Exhibit includes a collection of historic wooden boats that once plied the waters of the Chesapeake Bay as well as the watermen’s story.

The six-acre park includes a picnic area, a kayak launch, a boardwalk, a pier, and a sandy beach (no fishing or swimming). You cannot beat that view and it is a swell time to visit. [3]

Stop by – you will not be disappointed!
