Walmart, USA – American children are taught basic geography in grade school. Through these lessons, they are taught that the outlines of Colorado and Wyoming look relatively alike, and when Mississippi gets flipped horizontally, it resembles Alabama.

However, the design team at Walmart must have slept through that geography lesson, because Maryland looks absolutely nothing like Massachusetts.
Because of this plain and simple fact, Walmart had to pull Russell Athletic T-shirts from their shelves that featured the University of Maryland Terps logo with a confusing yet very apparent outline of Massachusetts alongside it.
Considering 60 percent of millennials report staying up-to-date on brands through social networks, it came as no surprise when a Walmart customer took to Twitter last summer to bring this issue to light.
“Someone please tell me why Walmart has a shirt that says ‘terps’ in the outline of the state Massachusetts,” the tweet by Twitter user Victoria_Owens8 read, which included a photo of the confusing shirt.

In late March of 2016, another Walmart customer took to Twitter to alert Walmart of the shirt’s error. Twitter use Samficco wrote,
“Dear, Walmart, I want to inform you that you’re selling UMD shirts with the state of Massachussetts on them.”

One day later, Walmart responded, claiming that “The state of Maryland is shaped to dip down on the right hand side which includes the word ‘Terps’ for the team.”
@Samficco Weโre so embarrassed we may never stick our head out of our shell again! Thanks for guiding this lost Terrapin back to MD! -Sonny

One week later, a different Walmart employee responded to the Tweet with a cheesy turtle pun and soon after, the shirt was taken off of Walmart’s shelves.
Walmart also released the following statement:
“We are working with Russell Athletic to determine how this happened and in the meantime are removing the shirt from our stores,โ the spokesman wrote in an e-mail to The Post. โWe understand the pride Marylanders feel for the Terps, and apologize for the mistake.โ
