On Saturday, June 23, a reenactment of the War of 1812 with Great Britain was held at the Calvert Marine Museum, in which cannons were fired and gunpowder exploded in the air.ย  Shipโ€™s Company, a history reenactment organization, came to the museum on this early afternoon to show the public, people of all ages, just what the War of 1812 was all about.

The Shipโ€™s Company is a living history organization dedicated to the preservation of the American maritime heritage, as stated in their website.ย  โ€œWe interpret many aspects of maritime life between 1775 and 1865. Interpretations include both Sailors (Navy and civilian) and Marines.โ€

The War of 1812 is only one of many maritime scenes the organization reenacts.ย  They also specialize in reenacting historical times such as the American Revolution, the Quasi โ€“ War with France, the Texan revolution, and the American Civil War.

Performing the War of 1812 on Saturday, the crowd was amazed at seeing lifelike battles take place before their eyes.

In addition to Southern Maryland, the organization travels all over, including places in Baltimore, Virginia, and DC.ย  This experienced group of actors/historians is dedicated to the history in America and portraying it to the people.

During the War of 1812, the United States was involved in a deep effort to gain the countryโ€™s commerce and right to the seas back from Great Britain.ย  The U.S. Navy won several sea victories in ship to ship battles.ย  Land battles were fought just outside of Washington, and as British shipโ€™s gunfire advanced, the battling US general Andrew Jackson was able to build up his defensive force strong enough to win the historic Battle of New Orleans.

Through all of this, the Shipโ€™s Company was able to put the War of 1812 into one great performance that taught the public about unforgettable American history.
