LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Commissioners, at the April 21 meeting, recognized the critical role of after school programs, issuing a proclamation in honor of After School Professionals Appreciation Week and highlighting the impact these programs have on local youth and families.

Led by Commissioner Mike Alderson, the proclamation formally designated April 20-24, 2026, as After School Professionals Appreciation Week in St. Mary’s County.

Speaking during the meeting, Alderson reflected on the importance of after school programs in the community, noting their value both for children and working families.

“I know there’s an after school program at my wife’s school… and it is packed with kids every afternoon,” Alderson said. “It’s pretty important for those kids to get a chance to decompress after school… it gives them a chance to socialize outside the classroom structure, which really helps out a lot.”

The proclamation emphasized that after school professionals provide “extended learning and social opportunities outside of school hours” and play a “decisive element” in connecting young people with meaningful relationships and enrichment opportunities.

County officials noted that these programs contribute to improved social-emotional development, better school attendance and stronger academic performance.

“St. Mary’s County is committed to supporting the after school professionals, who provide expanded learning opportunities to help close the achievement gap and prepare young people to be contributing citizens,” Alderson read.

Those Recognized

Several local leaders and program coordinators were present to accept the proclamation and were recognized for their roles in supporting youth programs across the county:

  • Ray Bivens, director, Recreation and Parks
  • Jessica Hale, deputy director, Recreation and Parks
  • Cherie Nelson, recreation division manager
  • Kelsey Jijon, youth and camps programs coordinator
  • Theresa Laychak, recreation specialist for school-age care and summer camps
  • Corky Young, community partner supporting youth initiatives, including the Boys & Girls Club and future YMCA efforts

During brief remarks, county staff expressed appreciation for the teams working across multiple sites to provide before- and after-school care.

“I just wanted to say thank you to all of the hard-working professionals that provide care for our children before and after school at six different locations within the county,” said Kelsey Jijon, who also noted that registration for next year’s programs will open May 18.

Ray Bivens echoed that sentiment, adding, “Thanks to all of our staff for the great job they do… wish more could be here. They’re a little busy this morning.”

Supporting Families Beyond The Classroom

Officials highlighted that after school programs not only provide academic support but also create safe, structured environments where children can build social skills and engage in enrichment activities.

The county’s continued investment in these programs reflects a broader commitment to youth development, workforce support and community well-being.

Residents are encouraged to recognize and thank after school professionals throughout the week for their ongoing contributions to St. Mary’s County’s children and families.
