The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters say heat index values could reach up to 105 degrees, creating conditions that may lead to heat-related illnesses for those spending extended time outdoors or without access to air conditioning.

The advisory includes portions of Washington, D.C., central, north central, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, as well as central, northern and northwest Virginia.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, family members and anyone without adequate cooling.

Those working or spending time outdoors should take extra precautions and be alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

The National Weather Service urges everyone to take the heat seriously and plan ahead to stay safe during the advisory period.
