SOUTHERN MARYLAND — The storms Sunday and Monday brought 2 inches of rain to my rain gauge. The fish may change some of their patterns when the weather clears, but great catches were made all week, with spot the most dependable, as usual.
White perch are biting early and late, with a great catch reported from the Solomons pier by savvy fishermen using shad darts or Sabiki rigs tipped with grass shrimp.

Bubba Gardiner found white perch biting from the fishing pier at the Solomon boat ramp at sunset on the riding tide last Friday night.

Speckled trout and bluefish are in the shallows at Point Lookout.
Bluefish are schooled up in the Chesapeake Bay, often mixed with Spanish mackerel. Trolled spoons and surgical eel lures are fish getters. The blues have moved into the creeks and rivers, too, cutting off hooks and lures with those razor-sharp teeth.
Cobia are taking trolled surgical eel lures and can also be found in chum lines by anglers using cut bait and live eels. There are a lot of undersized cobia and oversized red drum.
Snakehead and catfish will love that rainwater and should be active in the upper regions of the Potomac and Patuxent rivers.
Crabs continue to be plentiful.
Freshwater fishing is excellent, with bass, crappie, pickerel, bluegill and even white perch hitting all manner of lures and bait in St. Mary’s Lake.
