The Business and Industry Building at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata on Saturday was the venue for the 5th Annual Potomac Wildlife Art and Decoy Show. The show is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Charles County.

The event supports the foundation and the Scholarship for the Arts at the College of Southern Maryland.
The Community Foundation of Charles County is โ€œa public charity created by and for the people of the community.โ€ According to the foundation, โ€œThey work with donors to provide flexible solutions for giving while providing charitable organizations a sustainable source for funds.โ€ Their goal is โ€œto help you make a difference in our community and to make Charles County the best place to live and give.โ€
Saturdayโ€™s show was preceded on Friday evening with a โ€œCattails and Cocktailsโ€ reception at which the art was available for sale.
The Saturday show included a working decoy competition, appraisals, and woodcarver demonstrations. Artists participating included George Abbe, Amy Beavin, Ross Beitzell, Burkey Boggs, Donna Bowling, Kathy Boyle, William Bruce, Charlotte Dutton, Bruce Eppard, Richard Menard, Ernie Muehlmatt, Julie Oโ€™Brien, Gerald Putt, Milton Tierney, Kat Warren and Ray Whetzell.
Twenty-five percent of the proceeds of the sale throughout the event go to the Community Foundation. They in turn have provided grants to the Catherine Foundation, the College of Southern Maryland Foundation and Southern Maryland Resource Conservation & Development.
ย The Catherine Foundation provides support for โ€œCribs for Kids,โ€ a program for financially challenged parents who successfully complete free childbirth and parenting classes. They are provided with new cribs and car seats that meet industry safety standards.
The College of Southern Maryland Foundation provides $500 scholarships for their โ€œCareer Starters Healthcare Training.โ€ That program, which was developed with local hospitals, nursing homes, community centers and private medical practices, provides 16-week, non-credit training programs to attract entry level healthcare workers.
Southern Maryland Resource Conservation & Development partners with Southern Maryland Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, a nonprofit dedicated to mitigating deer over population, improving local deer habitat, and providing high protein meals to food pantries in Charles County.
