LEONARDTOWN, Md. — At just 6 years old, Carsten isn’t just exploring the outdoors, he’s already imagining a future where he shares it with the world.
The young Southern Maryland resident is currently ranked second in the 2026 Jr. Ranger Rick Contest, a national competition that highlights children with a passion for nature and conservation. But those closest to him say what sets Carsten apart goes far beyond the contest page.
“Everyone who knows Carsten instantly knows the impact he could make,” his mother shared. “He’s such a neat kid who is wise beyond his own 6 years.”
A Curiosity That Goes Beyond The Outdoors
While Carsten’s love for animals and nature is well documented, there’s another side to him that many might not expect.
“Aside from loving everything in nature and the animals, he’s also an antique and vintage car enthusiast,” his mother said. “He loves going to car shows and seeing all the old cars.”
That blend of curiosity, from wildlife to wheels, paints a picture of a child eager to understand the world from every angle.
Climbing The Ranks — And Staying Grounded
Now sitting in second place, Carsten is beginning to grasp the excitement of the competition, even as his family keeps things in perspective.
“He’s really excited about the possibility of winning,” his mother said. “We try to stay humble, though, it’s a big contest.”
Still, the momentum is building, fueled by a growing network of supporters cheering him on.
“His own teachers, friends and family are rooting and voting for him,” she added.

A Natural Connection To Animals
For Carsten, a connection to wildlife isn’t something he had to learn, it’s something that seems to come naturally.
“He’s always had a way with animals,” his mother said. “We have horses, and they are always drawn to him, and he has a calming effect on them.”
That instinctive bond is paired with constant curiosity.
“He’s full of questions, mostly trying to find ways to get close to animals.”

Dreaming Big: From Backyard Explorer To TV Naturalist
While many children dream big, Carsten’s vision is already taking shape — and it includes a familiar inspiration.
“He says he wants to be on TV talking about nature, like Jeff Corwin or the Wild Kratts,” his mother said.
The contest’s grand prize includes a wildlife experience with Corwin, making the opportunity feel even more real.
“He is so excited to have the opportunity to explore with Jeff Corwin and learn so much more about the animals.”
But beyond the prize, his passion is already shaping how he sees the world.
“His love for conservation already shapes how he sees the world in such a thoughtful way,” his mother said. “He notices the little things — animals, plants and habitats — and understands that they all matter.”

A Young Voice For The Future
Though still early in the competition, the experience is already sparking imagination and confidence.
“His imagination is going wild with the thought of the title Jr. Ranger,” his mother said.
And while the title would be exciting, those closest to him believe Carsten is already on a meaningful path.
“For 6 years old, he takes it seriously and wants to have his own nature animal TV show one day.”
