La Plata, MD – Romechia Marie Simms, 24 of Upper Marlboro, was given a two-week reprieve by the blizzard that blew through the region Jan. 22.

Facing charges for child abuse first-degree, manslaughter and neglect of a minor child by a parent, Simms will now face a jury trial in Charles County Circuit Court Feb. 11.

Simms is free on bond pending her trial, which had to be rescheduled from Jan. 25 after the snowstorm dumped more than a foot of snow throughout Southern Maryland.

She is the mother of the 3-year-old boy who died in a Wills Park swing set in La Plata May 2015.

Charles County Assistant Public Defenders Allison Heldreth and Elizabeth Connell will defend Simms before Charles County Circuit Court Judge H. James West.

She is facing 45 years on the three counts.

Charles County Stateโ€™s Attorney Tony Covington said back in September that Simms took her 3-year-old son to Wills Park prior to May 22, 2015, where the child remained in the swing for 40 hours.

When Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office deputies cut the child out of the swing, his shoes were full of water and he was determined to have been dead for eight-to-10 hours.
