SOLOMONS, Md. — Join Calvert County’s American Legion Auxiliary Unit 274 to lay wreaths for veterans as part of Wreaths Across America. The wreath-laying will take place on Dec. 13, and all are welcome to join.
Now in its 10th year, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 274 lays wreaths to honor over 300 veterans laid to rest at seven local cemeteries in Southern Calvert County. At 9:30 a.m., local scouts, volunteers, and members of the public will gather to “remember, honor, and teach” at the Corbin Pavilion at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. After the ceremony, volunteers will go out to the various cemeteries to lay wreaths.

Veterans will be honored at Solomons Methodist, Our Lady Star of the Sea, St. John Methodist, Mt. Zion, Olivet Methodist, St. Paul’s Methodist, and Middleham Episcopal.
“Everyone is welcome to help us honor our veterans,” Kathryn Rivers, a representative for the event, wrote in an email to The BayNet.
The event is meant for exactly that: honor. It’s not to decorate graves or remember the deaths of the veterans – it’s to honor their lives.
Rivers said the principles of the event are what make it so meaningful. With each wreath, the group remembers, honors, and teaches. Many of the veterans in the area died over a hundred years ago and may not have family left to remember them. By choosing to honor those individuals, Rivers said it forces people to take time to think about “the dash between those numbers.” The person made a difference in this world, and that difference should be honored.
Finally, Wreaths Across America aims to teach families and friends the values of freedom, but also what it costs. They hope to encourage members of the community to get involved with organizations that support veterans and further missions to assist active duty and veteran families.
“As a nation standing together, we can defeat terrorism, hatred, and injustice. Thanks to our veterans, we have the freedom to do just that,” Rivers wrote.
