SUNDERLAND, Md. — A Chesapeake Beach man is facing drug and traffic-related charges following a traffic stop in Calvert County earlier this month, according to charging documents.

John Anthony Phipps, 52, has been charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

A Maryland State Police trooper conducted a traffic stop Jan. 8, 2026, on a 2015 Ford F-350 along Federal Oak Drive near North Solomons Island Road after recognizing the driver from prior encounters and determining he was driving without a valid license. During the stop, officers allegedly observed a glass pipe with burnt residue and later located suspected crack cocaine during a search of the vehicle.

The suspected controlled substance and paraphernalia were seized and submitted to the Maryland State Police crime lab for testing.

Phipps was also cited for driving or attempting to drive a motor vehicle on a highway without the required license or authorization.

Phipps was released on recognizance following the charges. He is scheduled to appear in Calvert County District Court on March 2, 2026.
