LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Community spirit and holiday generosity were on full display during the 22nd annual Shop With a Cop event, an initiative that brought local families, law enforcement officers, and county leaders together to support children in need.

On Dec. 14, 2025, the annual event paired children with law enforcement officers for a special shopping experience, offering families assistance during the holiday season while strengthening relationships between police and the community. The commissioners handed out doughnuts and coffee, and the children enjoyed a sirened ride to Walmart, where they did their shopping. Following that, everyone enjoyed a big breakfast and gift wrapping at the St. Mary’s Fairgrounds.

A day that was filled with joy, excitement and community support that Commissioner Ostrow states, “it’s always a great morning, I do it every year.”

Commissioner Scott Ostrow attended the event with three other commissioners. He spoke about the importance of the program during the Dec. 16, 2025, Commissioners’ Time, highlighting its long-standing role in bringing the community together and providing meaningful support to local families. He emphasized how Shop With a Cop continues to foster trust and positive connections between law enforcement and residents.

Also this year, a food package was given to each child’s family, sponsored by the Optimist Clubs of St. Mary’s County. In a Facebook post, St. Mary’s County Shop with a Cop said 110 children participated this year, each spending $250 on Christmas presents at Walmart in California, for a total of $27,000.

Commissioner Ostrow also delivered a certificate of appreciation to the treasurer of the Shop With a Cop program. She is retiring after 22 years of service.

Now in its 22nd year, Shop With a Cop remains a cornerstone holiday tradition in St. Mary’s County, reflecting a shared dedication to compassion, service and community partnership.
