Pikesville, MD – A car is stolen every 40 minutes in Maryland. That’s better than the national average of every 45 seconds, but that’s still a lot of missing vehicles.
Unfortunately, in most cases, the owners of the vehicles made it easy for thieves. In 50% of theft cases, the keys were left in the car. A whopping 60% of the time the stolen vehicle was unlocked. The vast majority of stolen vehicles (95%) had no anti-theft device installed.
You don’t want to let your vehicle fall into the hands of a thief. Only around 60% of stolen cars are ever returned to their owners.
How can you stop a thieft from taking your vehicle? The Maryland State Police offer five easy suggestions they say can reduce the chance of your car being a target.
1. — This sounds simple, but remember, half of the time people don’t do it. Close and lock all windows and doors when you park your car.
2. — Park in well-lit areas at night. A full 66% of thefts happen at night.
3. — Do not leave a car running. Not only is it a target for thieves, it’s a safety hazard.
4. — Put your keys in your pocket! Do not leave them in the car.
5. — Hide your valuables. Put them in the trunk. Put them under the seat. Or better yet, take them with you.
