Chaptico Man Arrested Twice In One Week, Held Without Bond After Burglary At Mechanicsville Archery Shop

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A Chaptico man was arrested twice in one week after deputies first reported recovering a stolen vehicle and suspected crack cocaine paraphernalia, then later charged him in a burglary investigation involving a stolen crossbow from a Mechanicsville archery business.

Patrick Wayne Wood, 24, of Chaptico, was charged in two separate St. Mary’s County cases filed days apart.

In the first case, Wood was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, unauthorized removal of property, possession of a controlled dangerous substance that was not cannabis and possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.

Those charges stem from an incident reported July 14, 2026, after a victim contacted the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to report a green 2003 Honda CR-V had been stolen from the 28000 block of Old Lockes Hill Road in Mechanicsville. The vehicle was valued at approximately $3,000.

Charging documents state deputies responded the next morning to the 24000 block of Hill Farm Lane in Chaptico for a recovered stolen vehicle. Deputies located the Honda CR-V and found Wood at the residence.

Wood was advised of his rights and agreed to speak with deputies, charging documents state. Investigators reported Wood admitted he had taken the vehicle, kept it and refused to return it in a timely manner when asked.

During a search after his arrest, deputies reported finding a glass smoking device containing suspected crack cocaine residue in Wood’s front pants pocket.

Wood was released on a $1,500 unsecured personal bond on July 15. A hearing in that case is set for Aug. 18, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.

Two days later, Wood was arrested again and charged in a separate case with second-degree burglary, theft from $1,500 to under $25,000, three counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance that was not cannabis, malicious destruction of property under $1,000 and two counts of possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.

Those charges stem from a burglary investigation at Zimmerman’s Archery Pro Shop, located at 25606 Friendship School Road in Mechanicsville. Deputies initially responded June 30, 2026, for a follow-up investigation after the business owner reported another burglary had occurred overnight between June 29 and June 30.

Charging documents state the business owner reported a back door window had been shattered, doors to a shed had been opened and a black pole was found near the door. A Mathews Mission Sub 1 crossbow with orange string was reported stolen from the shed.

The business owner estimated the crossbow’s value at approximately $1,500. Investigators later reported a public search showed the crossbow was listed at approximately $1,999 on Mission Crossbows’ website.

Charging documents state detectives were investigating several burglaries and thefts reported between June 21 and July 14 with similar methods. One of those incidents had also been reported at Zimmerman’s around June 21.

During the investigation, detectives obtained search warrants connected to a cellphone belonging to another person. Charging documents state messages from the phone referenced “Tink,” which detectives identified as a moniker for Wood.

Investigators reported the phone data placed Wood and another person together around the time of the first burglary at Zimmerman’s. Location information from the phone also showed a Wi-Fi connection on June 30 at approximately 1 a.m. near Friendship School Road and Friendship Court, just up the road from Zimmerman’s Archery Pro Shop, according to charging documents.

Detectives also reported the phone user searched online for “places that buy bows,” which investigators believed was connected to an attempt to sell stolen items.

Charging documents state deputies later contacted Wood on June 30 in the area of the 40600 block of Parsons Mill Road during a check-the-welfare call. Investigators wrote that Wood had entered a mailbox at that location and went through mail that did not belong to him, further placing him in the area after the reported burglary.

Detectives later interviewed an associate of Wood and the other person connected to the investigation. The associate reported Wood contacted him and said he had a crossbow for sale, charging documents state. The associate also showed detectives a call log showing Wood called him numerous times around the time of the reported burglaries.

Wood was located on July 17 at the Carter Building, 23110 Leonard Hall Drive, in Leonardtown, and taken into custody in connection with the burglary case. During a search after his arrest, deputies reported finding Suboxone strip packaging in his wallet, with approximately half of the strip remaining in the package.

Deputies also reported finding two improvised smoking devices on Wood. Charging documents state both had white burnt residue consistent with the use of crack cocaine.

Wood was initially held without bond on July 17 and remained held without bond after a July 20 bond review before Judge Karen Friedman.

A preliminary hearing in the burglary case is set for Aug. 13, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
