
The NCAA men’s tournament gets underway today and Marylanders are sure to start placing their wagers online. Unfortunately, no Maryland school made it to the tournament, but three schools in the DMV did, including Howard University in Washington D.C., James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Industry experts are predicting $2.7 billion in wagers across the U.S. Sports betting is now legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Online betting is legal in most of those states as well. Maryland does not allow bets on how many points, rebounds, or assists a particular player scores though.
Voters in Maryland voted in November 2020 to approve the expansion of commercial gaming in the state and authorized sports and events betting. That revenue is to be used for education.
The University of Maryland women’s team made it to the big dance. That tournament starts Wednesday. The Terrapins will take on Iowa State University on Friday.
