LA PLATA, Md. — The County Commissioners of Charles County, Maryland, approved a resolution authorizing the conveyance of a 16.49-acre property known as “Tract A-102-1” to the Official Piscataway Conoy Tribe of Maryland Inc. during their meeting on May 6, 2025.
The property, spanning Charles and Prince George’s counties, was previously part of the “Washington-Baltimore Defense Area Nike Battery W-44” and is valued at approximately $2,075,000. The land transfer decision followed a public hearing held on April 8, 2025.
Commissioners emphasized that the transfer would support educational programs, human services, housing initiatives, cultural enrichment, recreational activities and various community development projects benefiting the Native American community.

However, the approval did not come without controversy. Numerous community members strongly opposed the land transfer. Commissioner Gilbert O. Bowling abstained from voting, saying he felt it was inappropriate for him to get involved with the tribal community’s disagreement on who would lead.
The approved resolution contains a reversionary clause stipulating that the property will revert to Charles County if it:
- Ceases to be used by the Official Piscataway Conoy Tribe
- The tribe discontinues operations as a nonprofit entity
- The property no longer serves Native American community interests
