UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — According to a press release from The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), the agency has filed a legal complaint seeking a declaratory judgment and injunction related to Prince George’s County’s fiscal year 2027 budget.
The commission said the legal action stems from the county’s plan to transfer more than $39 million in commission tax revenues, which M-NCPPC argues are designated under Maryland law for parks, recreation and planning services.
In its statement, M-NCPPC said the proposed transfer raises concerns about legal authority, procurement requirements and the agency’s ability to continue providing services residents rely on throughout Prince George’s County.
“While we made good-faith efforts to resolve this collaboratively, we need the court’s intervention to protect the public trust and ensure these resources are used as intended,” the commission said in the statement.
M-NCPPC emphasized that the filing is intended to seek clarification regarding the legality of the budget action and said it remains committed to reaching a lawful resolution while continuing to provide services to county residents.
The commission, established by the state of Maryland in 1927, oversees park and recreation services and land-use planning functions in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.
