On Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 8:47pm, TFC S. M. Van Bennekum responded to a reported theft from the Family Dollar in Leonardtown. In the broadcast of the incident, information was provided in regards to the suspects and vehicle used to flee the scene. While en route, TFC Van Bennekum observed a vehicle matching the description and displaying the provided license plates. A traffic stop was initiated on the vehicle in the area of Maryland Route 4 and Brown Road, and contact was made with the operator, Wallace James Thacker, 44, of Lusby and a female passenger. The female passenger admitted to being at the Family Dollar but advised she had receipts for the merchandise in the vehicle. The female willingly provided those receipts to TFC Van Bennekum. However, an inventory of the merchandise compared to the receipts revealed four items not listed as purchased. Upon further inquiry regarding the unlisted merchandise, Mr. Thacker provided information on how the items were obtained. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported back to the Family Dollar in Leonardtown. At the Family Dollar, contact was made with a complainant, and merchandise was returned to the establishment. Mr. Thacker was transported to the St. Maryโ€™s County Detention Center where he was charged with Theft Under $100.00 and held pending a bond review with the District Court Commissioner.
