EDGEWATER, Md. — A driver narrowly avoided serious injury Saturday afternoon after a large tree crashed onto their vehicle and brought down power lines along Central Avenue in Edgewater.

The incident was reported around 2:12 p.m. on April 25, 2026, in the 700 block of Central Avenue East. Crews arriving on scene found a red SUV crushed beneath a massive fallen tree, with live wires down across the roadway.

Despite the significant damage— including a shattered windshield and crushed front end — the driver was able to escape with what were reported to be non-life-threatening injuries. The patient was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

About 14 minutes into the incident, officials activated the Pure Water Way emergency detour plan to manage traffic in and out of the peninsula while crews worked to secure the scene.

Multiple agencies, including the Anne Arundel County Police Department, Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, and the Maryland State Highway Administration, responded.

Utility crews from BGE and Verizon worked to repair downed lines and restore safe conditions. Officials credited the coordinated response and detour system for helping maintain access during the incident and thanked residents for their patience.
