The controversial topic of sewer and water rates will be the subject of a referendum election in Chesapeake Beach Saturday, Dec. 7.

The referendum was the result of a petition drive led by opponents of the townโ€™s current sewer use rate of $11.28 per thousand gallons and water use rate of $4.28 per thousand gallons. Voters are asked to either approve the current rates, which were approved by a majority of the town council earlier this year, or reject the structure.

According to Chesapeake Beach Mayor Bruce Wahl, โ€œif the result of the referendum election is that the majority of the ballots cast โ€˜approveโ€™ the rates, the rate will be as stated in the referendum petition. If the result is to โ€˜rejectโ€™ the rates, then the town council must adopt a replacement rate structure by ordinance.โ€

Should the current rate structures prevail, they would remain in effect until June 30, 2014.

The polls will be open Dec. 7 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chesapeake Beach Town Hall.
