
UPDATE – 7/3/2025 – National Weather Service Confirms EF-0 Tornado Touched Down Near Leonardtown
CALIFORNIA, Md. — A tornado warning was issued Tuesday evening for central St. Mary’s and southeastern Calvert counties as a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado swept through the area.
July 1, at 7:45 p.m., the National Weather Service detected radar-indicated rotation near California, Maryland, with the storm moving east at 45 mph. The warning remains in effect until 8:15 p.m.
Communities in the storm’s path include Lexington Park, Lusby, Chesapeake Ranch Estates, and the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
Residents were urged to take cover immediately in a basement or interior room. The storm may cause flying debris, roof and window damage, downed trees, and flash flooding. Emergency officials cautioned against driving through flooded roads.
