ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On Feb. 25 at 3:30 a.m., officers responded to Hicks Avenue for the report of an assault.

Police say an adult male victim reported he was in a pick up truck getting dropped off when a male suspect on foot struck the truck with a metal baseball bat. The victim exited the truck and the driver left the area. The suspect with the baseball bat approached the victim and struck him with it multiple times on his arms and head.

The victim was able to run away and call the police. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment. His arm was broken in two places and he had a large laceration to his head from the attack.

The victim identified the suspect as a man he knew from the neighborhood, but did not know his name. Officers were able to identify him as Jesse Smith, 49, of Annapolis. A warrant charging Smith with first degree assault was obtained and officers located Smith on Feb. 27.

He was arrested and charged with first and second degree assault, reckless endangerment, possessing a dangerous weapon with intent to injure and destruction of property.

Smith is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center without bond.
