animal cruelty case summons southern maryland

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Two Calvert County residents are facing animal cruelty charges after investigators found a reptile, fish, and other animals living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions inside a Prince Frederick home, according to court documents.

Jamie Lee Burkett, 48, and Mary Jo Burkett, 42, both of Prince Frederick, were charged by criminal summons following an April 2, 2026 investigation at a residence on Armory Road.

According to the statement of charges, deputies and animal control officers discovered multiple animals inside the home, including a green basilisk reptile, fish, and poultry. Investigators reported the animals were not being provided with proper food, water, or adequate living conditions.

The basilisk reptile was found in a large glass enclosure and appeared severely underweight, with visible bones and signs of dehydration. Authorities noted the enclosure lacked proper moisture and contained little to no food.

In addition, fish were discovered in tanks with poor water quality, including foul odors and lack of proper filtration, while other animals were reportedly kept in conditions lacking appropriate shelter and care.

Investigators also observed that some enclosures were unsanitary, with contaminated water and inadequate bedding, raising concerns about the health and welfare of the animals.

Both individuals were charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and failure to provide proper care.

A preliminary inquiry is scheduled for June 1, 2026, in Calvert District Court.

Under Maryland law, animal cruelty charges can carry penalties including fines and potential jail time depending on the severity of the offenses.
