BALTIMORE — The 2026 America’s Best Drivers Report was recently released by Allstate, offering a look at which cities have the safest roads across the United States. The largest 200 cities were each ranked according to their collision likelihood using insurance data to determine which residents may be the most prone to car crashes. Baltimore ranked as the third riskiest city to drive through in America, while Washington, D.C., took the second-to-last spot on the list.

The latest Allstate report is being released at a time when Maryland is actively trying to reduce crashes and deter illegal behavior on state roads. New initiatives like the “Slow The Fast Down” campaign aim to reduce the number of car accidents that occur on Maryland roadways.

The average year between collisions in Baltimore is 4.49, while the relative collision likelihood compared to the national average is about 142%. The Allstate report explains that drivers in America’s safest cities are almost four times less likely to be involved in a crash compared to those in communities on the lower end of the ranking.

The report also highlights certain behaviors that cause collisions, such as phone use, driving at night and speeding. Additionally, Washington, D.C., was specifically named among the worst offenders for nighttime driving and phone use on roadways.

Boston was listed as the riskiest city for drivers, while two other Massachusetts cities were ranked right below Baltimore, so cities on the East Coast filled out the bottom five spots. On the flip side, many Texas cities were ranked as the safest places to drive.

“For the second straight year, Brownsville, Texas, ranks as the safest city, with drivers going nearly 15 years between collisions. Boston remains the most collision-prone at just 3.76 years,” reads a key point from the recent report.

Baltimore and Washington, D.C., are both risky cities to drive through in 2026, but many collisions happen due to habits that drivers engage in behind the wheel. Below, we’re going to go over a few of the most important steps that you can take to keep yourself safe while on the road.

How Can You Stay Safe On The Road?

Though Baltimore is one of the riskiest cities to drive in, you can reduce your chance of being involved in a crash by adjusting your behavior.

Offering ample space between your car and the vehicle in front of you is the first step. Additionally, you shouldn’t speed, brake abruptly or use your phone while driving. As a final note, drivers should avoid the road at night whenever possible, as crashes are more likely to occur in the darkness.

“Where you drive plays a role in your risk, but how and when you drive matters just as much. By pairing claims data with driving insights such as speeding, hard braking and phone use from Allstate’s Drivewise, we’re helping drivers take simple steps to prevent crashes and keep insurance costs down,” said Laura Hoffman, Allstate’s vice president of Auto Design and Telematics.

Driving in a statistically risky city for car accidents is scary, but by following a few simple steps, drivers can dramatically reduce their chance of being involved in a crash.
