Leonardtown, MD.โOn the morning of Sept. 15 Judge Karen Abrams of St. Maryโs County Circuit Court sentenced Kairon Hawkins, 20, no fixed address to five years in the Division of Corrections for multiple charges.
Hawkins faced multiple charges including robbery, first-and second-degree assault.ย
Present in the courtroom during the sentencing was Assistant States Attorney Joseph Stanalonis representing St. Maryโs County and attorney Kevin Hill representing Hawkins.
โMost significantly the defendant has a prior case where he struck an individual, along with a theft in Calvert County, that he is currently serving time for,โ said Stanalonis.
The charges stemmed from an incident at a birthday party that occurred in St. Maryโs County in September 2014. Hawkins approached two men at the party and assaulted both them. Hawkins then took a victimโs car keys and cellphone.
โBased on the facts at 4 a.m. everyone at this party was not sober. Individual’s reports of the party where very cloudy, we have to put this into context. It is a misunderstanding with the people at this party,โ said Hill.
After Hill was done pitching last arguments on behalf of his client, Hawkins was allowed a few moments to tell the judge why she should show mercy on him.
โI apologize for what I have done, I was hanging out with the wrong individuals. If I can go home I will not be back here [court], I want to finish up college,โ said Hawkins.ย
Judge Abrams took everything into consideration, and gave her sentencing.
โI have a lot of issues with your background in your juvenile sentences, these goals and hopes were there in the past. I also see you have behavior issues, drinking and drug issues also. This is some serious stuff in front of me, I donโt understand where you are going. Sounds like your hanging with the wrong people. This is disturbing,โ said Abrams.
Hawkins will serve five years, but will be awarded 209 days of credit for time that he has done prior to this sentencing.
Restitution is to be determined at a later date.ย
