In a tie game in the top of the 9th inning, J.R. Towles was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the Bridgeport Bluefish salvaged the series finale against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs with an 8-7 victory. The loss is the first of the season for the Blue Crabs after starting the season 3-0.
With two on and two out in the top of the 9th, reliever Jim Ed Warden hit back-to-back batters with the latter bringing in the go-ahead run for the Bluefish. Winston Abreu came on for Bridgeport in the bottom of the 9th and earned his first save of the season.
Matt Sommo (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for Bridgeport while Erik Hamren (0-1) suffered the loss for Southern Maryland.
Bridgeport (1-3) capitalized on a Southern Maryland error and turned it into four runs in the top of the 2nd. With the bases loaded and two outs, Sean Burroughs singled up the middle to bring in two runs and break the scoreless tie. Two batters later, Prentice Redman doubled down the left field line to plate two more runs and make it 4-0.
Southern Maryland (3-1) cut the deficit in half with two solo home runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Jake Opitz hit his first home run of the season off starter Ty’Relle Harris and two batters later Jose Julio-Ruiz hit his second in as many games to bring the score to 4-2.
