CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. — Cherry Bien Sy, 41, of Mechanicsville, faces multiple drug and traffic charges following an incident that began with a routine traffic stop and ended with deputies uncovering cocaine and drug paraphernalia in her possession.
At approximately 10:11 a.m. on April 18, 2025, Deputy Zachary Wolfe of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office observed Sy’s blue GMC truck traveling at 67 mph in a 45 mph zone near Three Notch Road and Commerce Park Road. When Deputy Wolfe initiated a traffic stop, Sy accelerated to approximately 58 mph on New Market Village Road, initially ignoring police signals.
Sy briefly stopped at the intersection of New Market Village Road and Thompson Corner Road. However, when Deputy Wolfe approached her vehicle, Sy abruptly drove off, turning left onto Thompson Corner Road. Deputy Wolfe continued to follow at a safe distance, refraining from initiating a high-speed pursuit. After reactivating his emergency lights, Deputy Wolfe successfully stopped Sy near Thompson Corner Road and Lockes Crossing Road.
When questioned, Sy admitted to having a suspended driver’s license but denied intentionally evading police, claiming she had not noticed the deputy’s emergency lights. After initially consenting to a search, then revoking consent, and eventually consenting again, deputies discovered several items of drug paraphernalia, including a used glass smoking device with burnt copper brillo pads located in the center console, and additional unused copper brillo pads beneath the rear seat.
Deputies also found a small white, rock-like powder in Sy’s purse consistent with cocaine. Sy initially stated she was unsure about the substance’s nature but admitted to recently snorting an unknown substance provided by a friend, which she speculated might have been cocaine.
Sy was subsequently arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center. She faces one misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled dangerous substance (not cannabis), carrying a potential penalty of up to one year imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine. Additionally, Sy is charged with four misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, each with a $500 fine.
She also received multiple traffic citations, including negligent driving, attempting to elude police, exceeding the posted speed limit, driving on a suspended license, and operating an uninsured vehicle.
Following her arrest, Sy appeared before Judge Karen Christy Holt Chesser on April 21, 2025, and remains held without bond pending trial. Her trial is scheduled for June 16, 2025, in St. Mary’s District Court.

The sirens are not loud enough. I blast my music and enjoy my rides they should be tested to be able to be heard over someone’s car stereo at full volume.
